Village Rabisha
The village of Rabisha (Vidin district) is located in North-West Bulgaria and is included in municipality Belogradchik. It is one of the smallest villages in the municipality and is situated 45km away from Vidin and 20km North-West from Belogradchik.
It used to be a significant vine-growing region in the years of the communist regime. After the changes in 1989, the Agricultural Cooperative in the village was closed and the land was returned to the owners. With no tools and funds to cultivate it, villagers at first granted it on lease, but gradually the overall agricultural sector in the country declined and these efforts ceased altogether. However, the municipality has recently won a grant for reviving the vineyards, which will be carried out in partnership with the only left wine producing company.
Today, most of the young people from Rabisha have moved to the bigger towns. The only jobs currently available are in the two or three food shops, a small hotel and a restaurant, and the orphanage.
Landmarks:
- Rabisha Lake - the oldest and biggest tectonic lake in Bulgaria (there was a sensational gossip that a monster, similar to Scottish Loch Ness, is inhabiting lake of Rabisha);
- Magurata cave - one of the largest caves in Bulgaria
- Memorial of perished for Liberation of Bulgaria
