Town Klisura
The town of Klisura (Plovdiv District) is located in South-Central Bulgaria and is included in municipality Karlovo. It is picturesquely situated in the west-most part of the Rose Valley, 105 km to the east of Sofia, 35 km west of Karlovo and 25 km northeast of Koprivshtitsa. The name Klissura means "gorge" and originate from the specific location of the town - it is perched on the slopes of the defile between the Balkan mountain range-Stara Planina and Sredna Gora. Klisura is distanced only 1 km away from the Sub-Balkan principal highway thoroughfare Sofia-Burgas . There are also 2 railway stations.
Klisura has rich history. It is one of the centers of the Bulgarian Renaissance and a town-stronghold of the national self-consciousness. The town is one of the most heroic towns in Bulgaria during April Uprising in 1876. Tragic was the fate of this small sub-mountain town which was completely burnt down. In the course of 6 days people from Klissura fought for life and on the seventh day over 400 of them were killed, and all the houses, the two schools and the church were burnt down.
Klisura is a starting point for many routes to the Central Balkan National Park and to the peaks of Vezhen in the Balkan Mountains and Bogdan in Sredna Gora. The town has traditions in rose-oil manufacture.
Landmarks: Klisura Historical Museum; historical place "Zli dol" (1.5km); Church of St Nicholas; historic homes such as Chervenakov`s house, Pavurdzhiev`s house, Kozinarov`s house, etc.
