Village Vranyak

The village of Vranyak (Vratsa district) is located in North-West Bulgaria and is part of municipality Byala Slatina. It is situated 12.14 km. South of Byala Slatina. Neighboring villages are Gabare and Barkachevo. 3 km east of the village is situated dam of Enitsa which is suitable for fishing.

History: There are several versions about the origin of the name "Vranyak. According to one, this is a accumulated name and means a place with crows (in Bulgarian: "vrani"). Another version is that the place was settled from the bravest and  most beautiful Asparouh warriors. These men were handsome, slender, with a typical ancient Bulgarian species - dark-eyed and  dark-haired - "vrani" means also black. From this with the addition of the old-suffix "yak"- Vranyak.

Sightseeing: The village was founded on the ruins of an ancient Thracian settlement. South of it  are situated several Thracian tombs. Ruins of ancient and early medieval settlements are found also in the "Small Vranyak" area. At the west is situated "Ostrovsky okop" ("Ostrovski trench") - and early Bulgarian fortification facility, built at the end of VII and in the beginning of VIII century to protect the lands against invasions of the Avars.
