Makresh Municipality is located in the northwestern part of Bulgaria (Vidin province). It borders on the municipalities of Koula, Gramada, Dimovo, Belogradchik. To the west it borders on the Republic of Serbia and Montenegro. The closest border control point is Vrashka Chouka. The municipality covers the villages of Valchek, Kiryaevo, Makresh, Podgore, Rakovitsa, Tolovitsa, Tsar Shishmanovo. The municipal centre, the village of Makresh, is 35 km away from the regional centre, Vidin, and 7 km from the railway station of Makresh. Important for connecting the municipality with the capital and the inside of the country is the Dimovo railway station, which 12 km away. The roads between settlements in the municipality are part of the fourth-class network. The main economic sector in the municipality Makresh is agriculture. The geographic location and the climate predetermine the favorable conditions for developing modern and cost effective plant-growing and live-stock breeding. The local terrain is quite diverse - flat land, rolling hills and semi-mountainous regions. The altitude ranges from 210 to 1100m. The famous Rakovishki Monastery Sveta Troitsa (Holy Trinity) is located near the village of Rakovitsa.
