The town of Opaka is located in North - East Bulgaria and is included in Targovishte district. The town is municipal center and is situated 70 km south of the city of Rousse and 250 km northeast of the Bulgarian capital, Sofia. The area of Opaka has old history. Archeologists have found evidence of Thracian, Roman and Slavonic settlements in the area and near the village of Krepcha, a stone monastery is the site of the oldest known proto-Bulgarian inscription, thought to date from around 920 C.E. It is assumed that the name of the town origin from the latin "opacus" (shady place) or Opan (white clay). Opaka is proclaimed for town at 05.09.1984.
